Service was a way of life in Freddie’s family. With a sense of duty and patriotism, he joined the Navy and served for 30 years, deploying multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. When Freddie retired from the military, he struggled with carrying the burden of three decades of service and the toll it takes on both your body and brain. Sharing Veteran Stories: Freddie Hicks

Meet Tanner who served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman in Afghanistan and later as a Special Operations Civil Affairs Medical Sergeant, supporting the U.S. Embassy operations in Northeast Syria and Bangladesh. Upon his return, he felt numb, struggling with posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideation. When he saw that he needed help, he reached out to Boot Campaign and it changed his trajectory. Our approach of not only supporting Veterans but their families as well meant that Tanner, his wife and family would all benefit. Mark comes from a long line of military service and knew at a young age he wanted to join the Armed Forces. He continued his family’s tradition and served in the U.S. Navy for more than three decades on an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team. The intense nature of his work wore on his body, but after his retirement, he started having troubling health and cognitive issues that led him to Boot Campaign. Through our individualized program, Mark regained control of his mental, emotional, and physical health.
