11 Ways to Show Veterans Appreciation
If you’re looking for ways to honor and show appreciation for those who have served our country this Veterans Day, we’ve put together a list of ways to get started! Keep in mind that some Veterans are comfortable with a gesture of thanks, but some may be more private about their service. Always make sure you care in a way that actually makes Veterans feel cared for! That said, here is some inspiration for you:
- Say thank you — A sincere “Thank you for your service” can go a long way, especially when accompanied by genuine conversation.
- Listen — Give Veterans an opportunity to share their experiences, if they want to. Some memories can be complicated, so let the Veteran guide the conversation and don’t push for details. Sometimes being genuinely listened to is one of the most meaningful gestures.
- Send a handwritten note — Write a note telling a Veteran why you appreciate their service and sacrifice. We created a letterhead to help you!
- Support a Veteran-owned or Veteran-founded business — Shop at or hire a Veteran-founded business when possible. We love DNA Hat Company, Black Rifle Coffee Company, and Outsider to name a few!
- Volunteer with a Veteran organization — Give your time to organizations that support Veterans and military families. Check out our website to see where you can join us!
- Donate in their honor — Make a gift to Boot Campaign in recognition of a Veteran you know.
- Spend Time with a Veteran you know — Meet up for a cup of coffee or do something together that you know they enjoy!
- Remember important dates — Reach out around notable times of year like Memorial Day or Veterans Day. These days can be meaningful and even difficult, so show intentionality and be gracious to their response.
- Include their families — Recognize that military service can impact spouses, children, parents, and other loved ones. Reach out to the whole family if you can!
- Rally Your Community to Give Back — Did you know you can create a fundraiser or appreciation event in your area that benefits Veterans? Check it out.
- Sponsor a Seasons of Service Program Family — You can donate to a military family facing hardships during a difficult season.
This Veterans Day, and every day, remember to show your gratitude for those who have given so much for our freedoms.
