Meet Tanner who served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman in Afghanistan and later as a Special Operations Civil Affairs Medical Sergeant, supporting the U.S. Embassy operations in Northeast Syria and Bangladesh. Upon his return, he felt numb, struggling with posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideation. When he saw that he needed help, he reached out to Boot Campaign and it changed his trajectory. Our approach of not only supporting Veterans but their families as well meant that Tanner, his wife and family would all benefit. Mark comes from a long line of military service and knew at a young age he wanted to join the Armed Forces. He continued his family’s tradition and served in the U.S. Navy for more than three decades on an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team. The intense nature of his work wore on his body, but after his retirement, he started having troubling health and cognitive issues that led him to Boot Campaign. Through our individualized program, Mark regained control of his mental, emotional, and physical health.

Chris joined the U.S. Navy at 19 and served as an EOD Technician for 26 years, enduring numerous injuries to both his brain and body. Upon retirement, Chris became reliant on multiple medications that made him feel like “a shell of a person.” Following his individualized treatment plan through our Health & Wellness Program, Chris now manages his symptoms completely free of medications and continues to live his best life with his family. Following his father’s example of service, when Mark decided to lace up his boots and join the military to focus on combat medicine. His time serving in Afghanistan exposed him to the realities of combat, leading him into a pattern of internalizing his emotions, strained relationships, burnout and, ultimately, an attempt to take his own life. At his lowest point, Mark knew he needed to seek professional help. A friend made the introduction to Boot Campaign and his healing journey began. Mark shares that his experience through the Health & Wellness Program “set the tone for the rest of my life.” The individualized approach to understanding and treating his mental, physical and emotional wounds is why he is living a full, happy and healthy life today.
