Boulder Crest Retreat Opens in Virgina to Serve Wounded Military
The Retreat Features Archery Range Funded by National Nonprofit, The Boot Campaign
Bluemont, VA (September 24, 2013) – Now open to the public is the 37-acre Boulder Crest Retreat located just outside of Washington, D.C. in Bluemont, VA to serve wounded military personnel and their family members. This first-class retreat facility is designed as a rural refuge from the clinical setting many wounded military grow accustomed to during the recovery process. One of the prominent on-site therapeutic activities is an archery range designed specifically to be ADA-accessible and features a covered facility with block and 3D target archery and six dedicated lanes. The archery range is sponsored by the Boot Campaign— a national nonprofit dedicated to cultivating awareness, promoting patriotism and providing assistance to military, past and present, and their families.
Boulder Crest Retreat officially opened its doors on September 6, 2013 at a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Admiral James A. Winnefeld, Jr. Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, several “Boot Girls” from the Boot Campaign, and numerous donors, friends and supporters who made the creation of the Retreat possible.
“It was an amazing feeling knowing that we (Boot Campaign) got the opportunity to contribute to such a wonderful facility. The retreat was absolutely lovely and it was obvious how much thought and care Ken and Julia (and the rest of their staff) put into making sure that nothing was overlooked and the needs of our wounded veterans would be met,” said Mariae Bui, Co-Founder of The Boot Campaign. “I felt an immediate sense of serenity there at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’m excited that our wounded heroes now have such a peaceful place that they can go for some R&R.”
Created by Ken Falke, a retired U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) expert and Master Chief Petty Officer, and his wife Julia Falke, the 37-acre rural Retreat is specifically created and built to support the needs of wounded warriors.
“These heroes hold up their end of the bargain when they fight for our country, and many sustain both physical and invisible injuries and wounds that require months and often years to recover,” said Ken Falke, founder and chairman of Boulder Crest Retreat. “By creating a place that helps shore up their families’ resilience during their long and difficult journey of healing, we are saying thank you, and we support you in your continued service for something much bigger than ourselves.”
Boulder Crest Retreat is a first-class, ADA-accessible facility designed for privacy, space, proximity to nature, and access to recreational activities that wounded warriors aren’t able to experience during treatment. The Retreat has four cabins that can host up to six people each, for two to 14 day visits. Recreational and therapeutic activities include hiking, fishing, archery, yoga, and meditation onsite or at nearby locations. The retreat is available at no cost to the wounded and their families.
