Rucking for a Cause in Quitman

/

A common exercise in the military to build endurance, strength, and mental fortitude is rucking. Rucking is fairly simple; it’s when one walks or hikes with a weighted backpack. It’s a great workout to do alone or with others, which is just what a group of Veterans and civilians in Wood County, Texas, decided to do to honor fallen heroes.

The Wood Country Ruck for the Fallen was hosted on Armed Forces Day, Saturday May 17th, in Quitman, Texas. Organized by U.S. Army Veteran James Attaway and other community volunteers, the ruck included a 1-mile, 5k and 10k option, and the ruck sacks worn had to weigh at least 35 pounds to be eligible for prizes.

Boot Campaign Veteran Ambassador Jason Howland rucked his way across the finish line saying, “The purpose of the Ruck for the Fallen is close to our hearts; to honor the sacrifice of service members who gave their lives defending our freedoms. Every step was a tribute to those who can no longer take one.”

Following the event, James shared, “It was a great turnout, especially for our inaugural event! We had 73 registered, 67 participants, and raised over $9,000 for Boot Campaign!  Thank you to everyone who made this possible and see you next year!”
