Root to Rise

/

“Root to rise” is common phrase in yoga and one that I have been hearing more frequently as I practice the craft.

The visual and physical concept in yoga encourages pushing against the floor, channeling core strength in order to fully extend through a pose with strength and balance, thus creating a more complete expression of a particular shape.

Recently, while on my mat, my mind began to draw similarities between the often heard three words and my professional life.

Our work at Boot Campaign aims to get at the root cause of the five most common invisible wounds of war — traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress, chronic pain, self medication and insomnia. We do so by providing comprehensive, holistic and individualized treatment to veterans at no cost to them. Our goal: to watch them rise.

To see veterans progress feet firmly planted with roots of who they are, where they’ve been, what they’ve seen and experienced but expanding, growing and rising towards who they want to become:

A veteran who has reclaimed and restored their health and wellness to fulfill their personal purpose at home, at work and within their communities however they do desire.

“Do not fast forward into something you’re not ready for.

Or allow yourself to shrink back into what’s comfortable.

Growth lives in the uneasiness,

the in between,

the unfinished sentence.

You are a season of becoming.”

Root to rise.
