From Grieving to Grateful: Gary’s Story

/

Fresh out of high school, Gary was unsure of what to do next, so he decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps. In retrospect, he says, “I needed the structure the Marine Corps provided.”

He worked in aviation ordnance and found himself connected to a brotherhood of tight-knit comrades. Gary worked hard, gained valuable experience and left the service. However, it was not an easy transition.

“I faced significant challenges, including anxiety, depression, and hormone imbalances and I was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder.”

Gary battled through years of challenges without addressing the root cause of his issues and compartmentalized his emotions. It was after the death of his wife of 45 years that everything he’d been suppressing rose to the top.

“ My posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms intensified. Aware of the significant challenges Veterans face due to suicidal ideation, I recognized the need to seek help before my symptoms worsened. A close friend, who had benefited from Boot Campaign’s Health and Wellness Program, recommended that I reach out.

“From my very first interaction with Boot Campaign, the coaches instilled a renewed sense of hope in me. Their guidance inspired me to take immediate action – overhauling my diet, exercising, fully embracing the benefits of breathwork and more. I quickly realized that if you don’t do the work, you won’t reap the rewards. By following the recommendations provided, I have discovered a sense of peace I never thought possible.”

And that peace gave Gary a sense of purpose.

When asked about what he would say to those who give to the mission of Boot Campaign, Gary said, “Your support has not only helped me rebuild but has also reminded me of my own resilience and purpose in life…because of your contributions, you are not only saving lives daily but also helping Veterans rebuild their lives and realize that we all matter and have a reason to be here.”

When you give to Boot Campaign, you’re helping Veterans like Gary find transformation that truly counts.
